Tower Scan Technique: Applications & Capabilities
The Tower Scan technique enables plant engineers to identify, diagnose, and evaluate mechanical integrity issues and performance anomalies within column internals. It provides valuable insights into equipment condition, process efficiency, reliability, and safety.
By providing detailed visibility into column internals and operating conditions, Tower Scan supports effective troubleshooting, improves equipment performance, and enhances plant safety and reliability.
Mechanical Integrity Assessment
- Detects liquid carryover and identifies damage or deterioration of demister pads.
- Inspects trays for damage, buckling, displacement, and mechanical issues.
- Identifies missing man-way panels, damaged tray supports, and internal structural deficiencies.
Process Performance Diagnosis
The Tower Scan technique helps diagnose critical process issues, including:
- Flooding
- Severe entrainment / Jet flooding
- Foaming
- Weeping or dumping
- Downcomer blockages
- Fouling above active operating areas
Operational Measurements
- Measures tray capacity by analyzing froth heights and liquid levels in downcomers.
- Monitors liquid levels on chimney trays and collector trays.
- Determines bottoms liquid level at the base of the column.
Grid Scan Technique: Packed Column
The Grid Scan method is designed to diagnose mechanical integrity issues and performance anomalies in packed columns, ensuring reliable operation, improved efficiency, and optimal process performance.
Key Capabilities
- Checks the integrity and condition of demister pads and liquid distributors.
- Verifies the correct placement and elevation of packed beds.
- Diagnoses vapor and liquid maldistribution within the packed bed.
-
Identifies process and mechanical issues, including:
- Liquid hold-up caused by fouling
- Crushed, damaged, or deteriorated packing
- Measures the relative density of the packed bed.
- Assesses liquid levels on collector trays and at the bottom of the tower.
The Grid Scan technique provides valuable insights into packed column conditions, helping engineers identify operational limitations, optimize performance, and improve equipment reliability.
Pipe Scanning Technique: Pipeline Integrity Assessment
The Pipe Scanning technique provides a reliable, non-invasive solution for detecting and measuring internal deposits, sediment accumulation, and material buildup within pipelines. This advanced inspection method enables accurate assessment of pipeline conditions without removing insulation or interrupting ongoing operations.
By delivering accurate internal visibility, Pipe Scanning supports preventive maintenance strategies, reduces operational risks, and improves long-term pipeline reliability.
Key Capabilities
- Accurately locates and measures the depth of internal deposits and sediment buildup.
- Requires the approximate density of the process material for accurate depth calculations.
- Eliminates the need for insulation removal, reducing downtime and operational disruption.
- Applicable to pipelines of various sizes and configurations.
- Enables inspections at elevated locations when suitable permanent platforms or scaffolding are available.
- Utilizes an adjustable yoke assembly to ensure consistent and repeatable measurements at horizontal (3–9 o'clock) and vertical (6–12 o'clock) scanning positions.
